This year the C.A.R.E Bears visited GMHC once again. The goal of this visit was to discuss our efforts to fundraise for the cause, but most importantly support in the organization of materials for future events. The C.A.R.E Bears worked with staff members Ms. Quanie and Mr. Tom to take inventory of t-shirts that were left over from past events, and sharpen pencils for future use. We also had the opportunity to discuss strategies to improve the work we do in the community (i.e. bringing awareness about HIV/AIDS, and fundraising).
This year, we’ve decided to shed light on the amazing work that GMHC does. GMHC was started by 6 gay men in 1981 with $7,000. The goal of this organization was and still is to provide education and support services for the community. GMHC is a volunteer driven organization, which means that they rely heavily on the community donating their time, skills and talents. Some of the support services provided are:
- Food Pantry
- Screening/Testing
- Legal Services
- Counseling
Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Inc. (GMHC) was awarded the 2017 New York Community Trust Nonprofit Excellence Award. For more information about GMHC, please visit http://www.gmhc.org.
In addition to continue our fundraising efforts, which our goal will remain at $1,500, we would like to educate our school community about the different communities that are affected by HIV/AIDS and about the resources available at GMHC.
After a few hours of service work, we then walked around 34th Street and saw the window displays at Macy’s and other retail stores.
